Is the Battle Hymn of the Republic a suitable hymn for a traditional OF Mass?

I’m very happy I lived back then…nowadays they would probably suspend you and send you to a shrink for singing that rhyme at school.

Well the whole rhyme wouldnt work because teachers use rulers to measure now… but i digress- yes haha times have changed

This. I’m a Daughter of the Confederacy.

Would the Yankees like to hear “In Dixieland I’ll take my stand to live and die in Dixie” in the same context, despite the fact that it’s got a lot less to offend yankee sensibilities in it than the other?

Even living in the South, I get enough $&@! from yankees, popular culture, and others without having to be reminded of the suffering inflicted upon my country and my ancestors in church by a yankee battle tune. Imagine that, Southerners actually have feelings and a sense of historicity as well…also, considering that it’s a battle tune, it’s not exactly going to make me feel very peaceful, considering everything my family and country has suffered at the hands of the Yankees. The South has yet to recover from the war the Yankees started and fought unfairly, so yeah, many of us haven’t “gotten over it” the way some people tell us to.

If i offend you or go too far, please let me know…

what would you say was the cause of the civil war?

Again, correct me if I am mistaken/ offend,

but the North (although very imperfect) had the intent of emancipation when the war began. Therefore, wouldnt tBHotR be the hymn of the morally correct side and correct to sing?

Just to clarify… we are talking about the DUE/ Tantum Ergo coincidence right? In that case, a tune can apply to many songs, some good and some bad… the tune of a song cannot be morally bad.
I thought your “it’s just a tune” comment was about “Battle Hymn”, and thus my comment. But you are quite correct; a tune and its harmonization are morally neutral.

(Altho when I was Security Chief and sitting front desk at the factory, I knew a guy who was one of the crudest guys in the place, and he actually got offended when I demonstrated singing “Amazing Grace” to "Gilligan’s Island 😃 )

D

haha that is amusing. and you are correct in saying that I was referring to DUE/TE

I just saw that Fulton Sheen wrote a good book on why wars happen. Unfortunately it’s out of print and sells for too much on ebay so I hope there’s a free pdf on line somewhere.

There ought to be… Considering public domain laws and all

You are mistaken if you believe that that war was waged in order to emancipate slaves. I know that’s what is commonly taught in schools, but it’s untrue.

What would you say was the cause then? I am taking an Advanced Placement class on this topic right now and would appreciate an outside point of view

Can we discuss it in private messages and perhaps tomorrow or the next day? It’s a bit late here and I have a dentist appointment tomorrow. I would be happy to direct you to some resources that would be more helpful to you as a student than my own views, as well. 🙂
