“Is the Catholic Church opposed to contraception and abortion???”

I’ve faithfully attended Sunday Mass all my life. Yet based on that alone, I would honestly not know what, if anything, the Church’s positions on contraception and abortion are because they are NEVER even mentioned during the homilies.

Seriously, the only reason I know what the Church’s positions are is due to my reading about them in the secular media and elsewhere.
You are a cradle Catholic then? Born and raised Catholic? If so, the Church relies on PSR (if you attended a public school) or a Catholic Education to teach you what the Church teaches. When you come to Mass, they assume you’ve been catechised (right word and sp?) in the faith.
If one is a convert, they rely on RCIA to do the instructing.

Your PARENTS were the ones responsible for teaching you as you grew up-- parents are the primary educators of their children in the faith.

If they did not teach you the doctrines of the church, now that you are an adult it is YOUR responsibility to do so.

Priests homilies should expand on the readings for that day and explain them.

I have heard both topics brought in to homilies at various times, I am sorry you have not. Abortion and prayers to end it are also frequently in the Prayers of the Faithful so it’s hard to believe that there has never been any mention of abortion in any church you’ve attended.
Liturgical Resources for Each Sunday

I think 1ke touched on this, but I was always under the impression that homilies were not suppose to be lessons in Catholicism. There are resources outside of Mass to assist individuals in faith formation. The homilies are suppose to be based upon the day’s readings. However, I do agree that many of our priests do not work moral teachings into their homilies as well as I think they could.

Aren’t they both the same thing? If the Preacher reflects on the days readings, would he not do so in accordance with Catholic teaching? Well, now that I write that, I just realized that it does not always happen. But it could, and should. But one should not rely entirely on the homily for faith formation. It is good, but not enough. There is too much to learn!

I recommend you spend less time reading secular sources and more time reading the documents of the Catholic Church.

Here…

Abortion
moral precepts and, 2271, 2274
and respect for life, 2770
those who help obtain an, 2272

Contraception
love of spouses, a mind open to life, and birth regulation, 2370
regulation of births and, 2399

So what was your pastor’s response when you met with him to ask him if he would include these teachings in his homily? I mean, you did meet with him to express your concerns before you came on a forum to complain, right?

Peace

Tim
In fact, my very polite letter to two local pastors on this matter last year went unanswered.

And I’m not complaining, just making a point.

How about the face to face meeting you had with YOUR pastor?

Since my unanswered letters included a comment that I would be happy to see the priests if they agreed, I must conclude that they did not want a face to face meeting.

You never met with YOUR pastor? Why did you send letters to other pastors? What was your point in doing that when you could have set up a meeting with your own pastor? All it takes is a phone call to the parish office to make an appointment. Your conclusion sounds to me to be the one you began with. Make a phone call and an appointment and discuss this with your pastor face to face.

Peace

I think it is sad that priests rarely discuss morality thesedays.
