I’ve recently been reading up on the concept of Limbo, is it the same as purgatory?

Limbo has two meanings in the Catholic Church.

One refers to the Limbo of the Patriarchs, the faithful of God who died before Christ’s passion. The souls of David, Moses, Abraham, etc. did not merit Hell but they could not enter Heavenly glory because Jesus had not yet died so that their sins could be redeemed. When it says in the Creed that Jesus descended into Hell, it is properly meant this Limbo, where the New Adam released the Old Adam from the original sin of mankind. At this point, this Limbo ceased to exist.

The second Limbo refers to a place of peaceful bliss that unbaptized babies would enter upon death, which was different from full communion with God in heaven. This was a teaching of the Church for most of Church history, but was not mentioned in the most recent Catechism. Almost all current theologians agree that the idea of infant Limbo need not be believed. The current teaching is now this - Catechism paragraph 1261 states:
As regards children who have died without Baptism, the Church can only entrust them to the mercy of God, as she does in her funeral rites for them. Indeed, the great mercy of God who desires that all men should be saved, and Jesus’ tenderness toward children which caused him to say: “Let the children come to me, do not hinder them,” allow us to hope that there is a way of salvation for children who have died without Baptism. All the more urgent is the Church’s call not to prevent little children coming to Christ through the gift of holy Baptism.
I hope this helps. God bless your search!

The Church more or less has found Limbo a suspect idea. Story from 2007 is here.

More history here.

So is limbo a separate place from heaven? Would that mean there are more places The Heaven, hell, and purgatory?

The Limbo of the Patriarchs once existed but no longer does. The Limbo of Infants was taught to exist for much of church history but it is no longer church teaching and practically no one buys into that theory anymore.
