So I was wondering, is the Crucifixion of Our Lord Jesus Christ a sad or a happy thing? It is most certainly sad, for the most good shepherd, the Son of God died that day, no less for all of our sins and iniquities. But it is also happy, for we have been redeemed by His most merciful Sacrifice. I once heard a Priest say, " You can’t say you wish Jesus wasn’t crucified, for then you could not be with Him/forgiven ( I am paraphrasing) " I have never known whether to smile or frown when looking at a Crucifix, but my instinct is always to frown. Any good answer?

It is a mix of sorrow and glory (I’m avoiding the word joy as I don’t think joy would be the best way of describing it) - let’s not forget that in St John’s Gospel the Passion is a glorious triumph and Christ reigns as King from the Cross.

It is both. Felix culpa. In the Exultet, we call Adam’s sin “happy”: “O Happy Fault that brought to us so great a Savior.”
