Is the Douay Rheims truly the best translation?

I was musing in the back of my mind as I read these posts, I have seven translation of the Catholic Holy Bibles (the two Challoner DRs counted as one translation) and two translations (including the venerable KJV) of non-Catholic Holy Bibles.
So, when I am in doubt of the meaning of a scripture, by the time I read all my available translations (giving preference to older translations), I usually have an accurate idea as to the meaning of the scripture in question.
In my opinion, that’s the perfect and proper way to do so.

And thanks.

So you agree with Luther, that James was written by a Jew who had heard of Christianity but didn’t know anything about it? Do you agree with him that Revelation neither teaches Christ, nor can Christ be found in it? Do you also agree with him that James and Revelation should be stricken from the bible, including Jude and Hebrews?
No, I don’t agree with him on that. 🙂

Bengoshi:

Concerning the apparent assertion that the Jews are the God’s eternal stewards of truth and Sacred Scripture: the Bible directly testifies against this notion. Consider these passages from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans:

“I will call that which was not my people, my people; and her that was not beloved, beloved…and it shall be, in the place where it was said to them, You are not my people; there they shall be called the sons of the living God” (9:25-26.)

Yes, the Jews don’t accept the deutrocanonicals, but they did not accept the New Testament and Jesus Christ, which is why the teaching authority of Christ and the Church was passed on to the Apostles.
The passage you quoted is out of context. IT speaks about salvation and adoption, not Scripture.

That’s why I said that it is only with regard to the OT. They are the chosen people, aren’t they not? Salvation comes from the Jews. The OT was of Jewish origin and so was Christ.
In regards to "who is the Church?” a common misconception is “whoever believes in the Bible” can simply make up their own religion. Again, I turn to Romans where Scripture again refutes this:

“…how shall they believe him, of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear, without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they be sent…” (10:14-15.)
We do have preachers. That’s why we are called Evangelicals, we preach the Gospel (Evangelion).
Here you will see that God’s Church is built on those specifically sent by Him, and the Gospel is illuminated and explained through their preaching. This is the historic, Apostolic Church, with St. Peter as the first Pope and visible head, entrusted with the Keys of the Kingdom of God on earth. (Matt. 16:18-19.) Any subsequent declaration of “truth” contradictory to the historical, Apostolic tradition and Scripture, whether made by Jew or by Gentile, MUST be rejected, including tampering with the canon of Scripture.

I wholeheartedly agree that Jews present their “Old Testament” as the definitive canon. Some of their reasoning here was the lack of availability of Hebrew texts at that time, which I consider to be Divine Providence in transferring the complete Scriptures to the Church (and many of them have subsequently been discovered in Hebrew.) They also quite conveniently rejected some of the most lucid prophecies of the rejection and passion of Christ. Here is an example from the Book of Wisdom:

“Let us therefore lie in wait for the just…because he upbraideth us with the transgressions of the law…He boasteth that he hath the knowledge of God, and calleth himself the son of God…Let us see then if his words be true, and let us prove what shall happen to him, and we shall know what his end will be. For if he be the true son of God, he will defend him…Let us examine him by outrages and tortures…Let us condemn him to a shameful death…” (2:12-20)

As far as the doctrinal content of the Deuteros, they agree with the doctrine of the Church. Man-made religions are commonly based on the protestant canon which doesn’t consider these books when formulating their doctrine, so it doesn’t always match up to them.

As far as the historical content of the Deuteros, they are not intended to be a historic record, but wisdom conveyed through the parables and stories inspired by the Holy Spirit.

If you want to get critical about “dubious texts”, consider how the Greek and Hebrew manuscripts used to translate your protestant Bible have been revised dozens of times in less than 200 years! So much for Sola Scriptura… The King James Bible has thus been changed many times, and most frequently corrected to confer with the Latin Vulgate (if you don’t believe that, check out the NKJV text notes where it lists all of the KJV deviations, and compare that to the Douay-Rheims.) And when the critical text deviates from the Vulgate, I give the Vulgate authority. I do maintain that the Challoner Douay-Rheims is the most beautiful and reliable preservation and interpretation of Sacred Scripture in the English language.

Peace in Christ,

Jonny Pollock
We all have been commissioned by Jesus to Go and make disciple of all nations, to baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. To teach what Christ taught, and He will be with us until the end of the age.

I just deleted 11 posts and I’m sure that there are more that should be deleted. The conversation is turning into an argument. Debating is healthy, arguing is just another form of violence in order to control another person. Knock it off!

Stick to the subject and be respectful of each other. Everyone has an opinion and everyone deserves to have his opinion acknowledged. This does not mean that you agree. But it costs nothing to politely state why you disagree.
