Is the Priest’s Homily actually part of the Mass? I remember someone telling me a while ago that it was somehow a “break” or a “pause”. Is there a name for this? I could be totally way off, just curious. Thanks
I don’t think so. It is optional on week days, at least in the EF.Is the Priest’s Homily actually part of the Mass?
In the GIRM it is under part B (Liturgy of the Word) of section 3, “Individual parts of the Mass”Technically no. (There is no text or script he must follow.)
And neither is people’s communion for that matter.
- The homily is part of the Liturgy and is strongly recommended, for it is necessary for the nurturing of the Christian life. It should be an exposition of some aspect of the readings from Sacred Scripture or of another text from the Ordinary or from the Proper of the Mass of the day and should take into account both the mystery being celebrated and the particular needs of the listeners.

The part I quoted from the GIRM says as such:Wow i really like how fast people reply on this site! Thanks guys.
What i was kind of leaning towards was that sometimes a priest may talk about something controversial and that his opinion is not the official opinion of the Church. So is what he says actually a part of the Mass? Sorry i’m not great at communicating what i want to say.
Some priests are skilled in tying in any social issue with the readings. Some just abandon the readings and tackle the issues. As long as the teaching is inline with the Church, then its fine I guess. It should be an exposition of some aspect of the readings from Sacred Scripture or of another text from the Ordinary or from the Proper of the Mass of the day and should take into account both the mystery being celebrated and the particular needs of the listeners.
Experientially, it is a break in the sacred action. Some people see it as an intrusion (I remember Martin Mosebach being of this opinion in his book The Heresy of Formlessness). It is sort of an interlude from the timeless world of the sacred liturgy; some priests even take off their chasubles to preach. But formally it is part of the Mass.Is the Priest’s Homily actually part of the Mass? I remember someone telling me a while ago that it was somehow a “break” or a “pause”. Is there a name for this? GOD BLESS ALL THAT LISTEN TO HIS WORD,S:)
It’s part of the mass, but it’s one of a very few optional parts.I don’t think so. It is optional on week days, at least in the EF. Trying to find a link because I too remember reading it’s not part of the Mass.
windsorlatinmass.org/wtnews/060625.pdf is all I could find. It has something to do with his taking off the maniple to give a sermon (to break the continuity of Mass)
