Hi
I am due to be baptized and confirmed this Easter, and have been to RCIA for some time now, but feel that I want a deeper understanding of the Catholic faith and beliefs. I don’t think I will have time for a proper full time catechism course, but have found several home study guides online.

One I have found is the Knights of Columbus Luke E. Hart series. It seems well written and interesting, but I wondered what others thought? Would it be any different to something I study in my home country (England). I am just concerned that I would go all the way through it, to find that it might be innacurate?

Any help would be greatfully received.

God bless

David

Well, it may list different Holy days of Obligation than are observed in England, and other small details like that, but I don’t think it would be very different from a study guide prepared by the Catholic Church in England.

Oh, and words like “color” and “flavor” will be spelled without the unnecessary u. 😉

I’ve read some of these and believe they are quite orthodox. They were authored by Professor Peter Kreeft of Boston College. I’ve read several other works of his and found his explanations helpful. I’ve not come across anything in his works that depart from the Catholic Faith.

I have some hard copy booklets in this series from the K of C, CIS (Catholic Information Services). They cost a US dollar each and there are a lot of them. The same material is available on-line for study and after each lesson there is a test to see whether one is tracking or not. I am doing the on-line course and have completed about a dozen of the lessons. I am already quite well grounded in the Catholic Faith (Certified Advanced Catechist in my diocese.) and in my opinion one need have no qualms about the orthodoxy of the material in the course. The Luke E. Hart series is excellent for readability, completeness, and orthodoxy. One need not be a theologian to understand the material. Go for it. Completely free of any fees or expense if one has access to the internet. Go for it! 👍
