Is the mechanistic explanation of persons reasonable?

Yeah, eliminative materialism (that we’ve no minds) is incoherent. Sadly, a lot of people give it the time of the day since they do not want admit that there are things that are non-physical, that lack volume and extension. It opens the door a bit to the possibility to an immaterial mind like god to exist.

Rather than admitting that there are things science cannot and will not explain, they prefer to throw the mind overboard.

For the present, I agree with this post and the preference to throw the mind overboard. However, approaching this idea from contemporary science, technically it is not an issue of “no minds” rather it is a change of venue. There is a difference between no mind, a material mind, and a rational spiritual soul which includes intellect and will.

That may be so. Exactly where ignorance is distinguished from dishonesty is not always clear. I tend to think we deceive ourselves quite a bit. We all have the capacity to construct arguments for what we want to be true. The problems and consequences of materialism just seems so obvious to me.

Didn’t notice your second post yesterday, so just dropped back in to say congratulations, you’re only the second person ever to get yourself on my ignore list and you did it in the space of just two posts!

The first guy got himself suspended for calling other posters dishonest, but then he was given to being superficial and arrogant, you’ll know what I mean.

I didn’t really say you or anyone else was dishonest. I said the argument was dishonest. As tonyrey points out it could be called inconsistent. It most certainly is that. I however think it goes further as it involves deception in order to invalidate the immaterial aspect of man and has such terrible consequences that it must be fully recognized for what it is.

I’ll certainly admit that I have plenty of dishonesty in me. I deny things about myself that are obvious. So in calling something dishonest I dont do so from a position of not having that in myself. If we were more honest with ourselves the world would be a much better place.
