Can someone explain to me the situation regarding the Society of Saint Pious X? Are they schismatic? Are they in partial communion with the church? Are their priests and masses licit? A family close to me attends SSPX masses and they claim that they are NOT schismatic and ARE in communion with Rome. Everywhere I look I find contradicting opinions regarding this order. Have there been any official statements from the Vatican on SSPX?

Officially, the Bishops of the SSPX were excommunicated, and then that excommunication was lifted, yet no Canonical status was given. So, they are in irregular status with the Church…which means they are not per se in communion, but also not defined by one of the sins of separation. So…nobody really knows.

This is a very difficult topic to discuss on the forum because when it’s come up before, responses have tended to be flagged and deleted, which carries penalties for those who post. I’d suggest you might be better off asking your pastor in person.

Because any thread that has a lively discussion get get’s flagged and shut down here.

Cue this post being flagged, lol.

Yeah and I keep getting contradiction information. I just thought I’d put it out there and see if y’all had any info on the topic.

Yes they are in schism. See official Apostolic Letter issued by Pope John Paul II.

What has changed since then? Pope Benedict lifted the excommunications which also contradicts SSPX views that nobody had been excommunicated. You can’t lift something that never existed.

This is the letter by Pope Benedict. You can clearly see that SSPX has been given many chances to be reconciled with the Church but they have so far refused.
