Is the soul immortal?

The Church teaches that the human soul is immortal.
However, Matthew 11:28 says “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; fear him rather who can destroy both body and soul in hell.”

Does this mean that the soul can be destroyed in hell?

Dear ssr,

When we say that someone has destroyed his life, we usually mean that he has ruined his life–not that he has committed suicide. He still exists, but in a very sorry state. This is the way Our Lord is speaking in that passage. To choose hell is to destroy one’s life in Christ. The soul still exists, but in the sorriest condition.
