Is the young pope okay to watch or does it insult Catholicism?
Chris Byrd, Catholic News Service wrote:
“Sorrentino ups the ante to the level of outrage with a dream sequence in which Pius urges an adulating throng to have abortions, promote euthanasia and enjoy free love. If that’s somehow meant to be thought-provoking, it registers instead as patently – and pointlessly – offensive. … Saddled with a cartoonish view of the church, and driven by the urge to be edgy, “The Young Pope” repels more than it engages.”

It is a STRANGE show.

The first scene, the Pope is crawling through a sea of dead babies.

I found it to be a very unrealistic and surreal show. Does it insult Catholicism? I think so, in that it tries to paint the papacy in a bad light by making him look cruelly authoritative.

There is also some nudity and sex. If that would be a near occasion of sin for you, then you should avoid it.

Having said that, the show has some good points.

The show is a mixture of complexity

Honestly I haven’t seen the whole show but bits and pieces of it and I must say the writers really know how to grab at the audiences attention. There is a scene for example where he walks in on a Sedia and papal tiara (Im hooked already lol) and he gives a speech to the cardinals as the newly elected pope. It is honestly something that majority of Catholics Ive seen that watched the show (Even some agnostics) consider to be how a “real” pope should be in terms of perspective and authority - for this scene at least. Basically his speech is a traditionalist’s wet dream, the writers of the show named him “Pius XIII” so you can see how this show is pretty much reflecting an opposite image of Francis’ papacy (This came out in 2016 so when the young pope references “The old papacy” its most likely hinting to viewers the papacy of Francis)

Anyway the show has moments that cater to a lot of traditionalists but other moments that are more for shock value but thats what it is - a drama/comedy although its ironic and funny how Hollywood managed to grip Catholics the way they did because there are Catholics that are triggered over this show and others that enjoyed it. Take it how you want it but the show aims for a more traditional approach in terms of how the Church, Papacy etc should exercise its authority. Everything else Watch at your own discretion

Perhaps I’ll give a couple from the first season while I try not to give away too many spoilers.

Just in case you don’t want to read spoilers my response is a little ways down…

  1. The ambition of some of the Cardinals to become Pope and the complete emptiness of that ambition. There is a heck of scene in the first season when the young Pope’s mentor is not elected Pope and his mentee played by Jude Law is elected instead.
  2. The damage that these abuse scandals can do. In the first season one of the young Pope’s main rivals is an archbishop in the US. The archbishop abusing just about everybody. The story of this archbishop is, in part, told from the view of his illegitimate son.
