I get very confused with all the different terms used. Is there a “Eastern Catholicism For Dummies” or some such guide that could explain all the different rites, liturgies, histories, hierarchies, etc. in simple terms?

The One Church and the Communion of Churches put out by the pastoral association of eastern Catholics of Southern California.

Yes, there are several! Here are a couple of books I can recommend:
  1. 101 Questions and Answers on Eastern Catholic Churches by Edward Faulk, a deacon in Southern California.
  2. The Eastern Catholic Churches: An Introduction to Their Worship and Spirituality (American Essays in Liturgy) by Joan L. Roccasalvo, C.S.J.
There are also good videos available on Youtube, here’s one - “Who are Eastern Catholics? An Interview with Father Maximos of Holy Resurrection Monastery”.

Hope that gets you started! 🙂

Also, peruse Fr. Roberson’s brief survey of the history of each of the Eastern Catholic Churches (and their applicable counterparts in Orthodoxy and in the ACE) and their present situation at the CNEWA’s website.

I was just reading
Catholic Mass For Dummies [Paperback]
Rev. John Trigilio Jr. (Author), Rev. Kenneth Brighenti (Author), Rev. Monsignor James Cafone (Author)

It has some things you are looking for, as it speaks a great deal about both rites.

I was learning about all kinds of eastern rite stuff right along side the latin rite. You get to see both sides.
