Is there a book, set of articles, or anything out there which critiques the errors of modern philosophy?

There are certain philosophies which have errors and the more modern ones seem to have seeped into our society’s thinking.

I would like to find some source of information containing critiques of the errors from a Catholic point of view, something which contains information which could be used to combat secular thought and ways of thinking.

Is there something like this?

I think you should read The last Superstition by Ed Feser.
But it should be noted that I do not know of any philosophy that does not have errors.

There is a book called “The Popes Against Modern Errors”. It contains a compilation of 16 papal documents which refute a range of erroneous modern ideologies and philosophies. I have found it to be very helpful.

Hi, I asked the same question because it seems to me that most people today are repeating different “philosophical” ideas as the truth without giving it a serious thought. These ideas permeate our culture so much that it can and does affect people believing in the Christian God. I’m doing research on these ideas to see what they are, where they came from, why are they so popular and so on. I listen to the discoures by Fr. R. Barron and D. B. Hart on the YouTube as I find them deep, informative and taylored for our post-modern world. Right now I’m also reading a book “The Truth of Catholicism - Ten controversies explored” by George Weigel. It discusses topics like ‘Is Jesus the only Savior?’, ‘Does believe in God demean us?’, 'Liberal Church? Conversative Church?, or ‘Is Catholicism safe for Democracy?’. I’m just in the middle of the book but so far I found it very helpful.

“The Emperor’s New Clothes” ? I think it is written by Kirkpatrick? I know it will hit some points you are looking for but it might also have good references within.

G.K. Chesterton’s “Orthodoxy” was a good critique of modernism. I was amazed, fool that I am, that they were arguing these same points in the 1930’s. He packs a wallop with insight and logic.

And I’m not sure but “Trojan Horse in the City of God” might also be a good read and reference.

Catholic Answers publishes a useful book called Disorientation. Chapter by chapter, it describes and refutes the following philosophies:

Hedonism
Relativism
Progressivism
Modernism
Scientism
Fundamentalism
Radical Feminism
Multiculturalism

You might like it. Google it.

Modern philosophy is regularly promoted in the media. Uncovering its modern roots is very important so that Christians can understand that words and images can lead some to thinking that things have changed. Some things have but it’s obvious, not for the better. The philosophies are woven into movies, TV shows, books and some magazines.

It will keep you busy for the rest of your life. :bigyikes::bigyikes:
A bookshelf full of books couldn’t refute all the modern philosophies because there’s always a new philosopher stating theories in new ways. An old man who started reading all these books as an infant couldn’t finish them all.

Here’s a better way. 😃

Have the knowledge to refute modern philosophies yourself. :extrahappy:
Read Aquinas’ Summa Theologica

newadvent.org/summa/

or Aquinas’ Summa Contra Gentiles which in some ways is better:

dhspriory.org/thomas/ContraGentiles.htm

All you have to do is read one page a day carefully.
In two or three years you’ll be one of the world’s great philosophers.

The first thing you need to do is measure everything by the contents of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. A couple of other good sources is Catholic Answers Tracts, catholic.com/browse. Another good source is the EWTN library, ewtn.com/vlibrary/search.asp

These sources do not deal in philosophical errors specifically but in the truth of what the Catholic Church teaches.

For specific questions you cannot find an answer to you can ask a question here and then you have to decide who is giving the best answer backed up by good sources.
