My swim coach told me that there was a list of people who were going to heaven. I assumed he was wrong because we as Catholics do not believe in as assurance of salvation so how could there be a list of people who are definately be going to heaven. He told me that the book of revelation says that there is a list. Does anyone know if this is true?

Oh yes, please tell your swim coach that the list is made up of all the Catholic parish records! 😉

Revelations 3:5 . . . “If you conquer, you will be clothed like them in white robes, and I will not blot your name out of the book of life;* I will confess your name before my Father and before his angels.”

**Book of Life *the register of God containing the names of the redeemed. See also Rev.13:8;17:8; 20:12; 15; Exodus 32:32;Psalms 69:28;Dan 12:1; Mal 3:16; Lk 10:20

They may be refering to the book of life. The book of Revelation uses the term “book of life”
Then I saw a great white throne and the one who sat on it; the earth and the heaven fled from his presence, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Also another %between%book was opened, the %between%book of life. And the dead were judged according to their works, as recorded in the books. 13 And the sea gave up the dead that were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and all were judged according to what they had done. 14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire; 15 and anyone whose name was not found written in the %between%book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.
Rev 20:11-15 (NRSV)
Since Revelation is a very figurative, I doubt there is a physical book. Since God wants all to be saved and we are sinners, even a vitual list would be quite dynamic. Today I’m on it. Tomorrow I sin and am not. The day after that I repent and am back on it.

A question for your coach might be: What is the purpose of this list? How would one get on it? (As a Catholic, we believe we are in the book of life due our baptism and then living our life as God intended.)

i like the answer of chimakuni—i believe that by reason of my baptism (my name is in the book of life) but also i have to live my faith & die in the state of grace to reach heaven so even if my name is in the book of life, there is no guarantee that i will reach heaven if i die in the state of mortal sin

Jesus spoke of the book of life in Revelation 3:5, saying, “He who conquers shall be clad thus in white garments, and I will not blot his name out of the book of life; I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels.” In context, this seems to suggest that even though someone’s name may be written in the book of life right now if he does not conquer, i.e., if he does not persevere in faith and charity to the end, his name may end up being blotted out of the book of life.

The Church also posesses a “partial copy” of the Book of Life in her Litany of the Saints.

 Hes making a list and checking it twice, trying to see whos naughty or nice, the fundie god is coming to town.:rotfl:

But seriously, as to your statment “we as Catholics do not believe in as assurance of salvation”. Of course we do. We dont believe in “Once Saved Always Saved”. Very differant Idea. We can have a moral certainty that we are going to heaven because our present state cannot be invalidated by our future performance. In other words, I know I am on the raod to Heaven NOW but I also know that, in theory, it is possible for me to repudiate my faith and lose my salvation. You have an assurance that God is a loving and forgiving God and through a life of conversion and penance you will attain Salvation as a gift from God.

can God use whiteout in the book of the elect?
Yes, in a way:

Exodus 32
32 Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin–; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.

Psa. 69:28a Let them be blotted out of the book of the living.

Rev. 3:5a He who conquers shall be clad thus in white garments, and I will not blot his name out of the book of life.

Physical time is a physical measuring device to calculate the change bettween mass, energy and empty space. All of these things were created by our Spiritual God who exists outside of physical time. God looks at creation and physical time as if He were looking at a picture on a wall. Because the book of life is Spiritual, it too is outside the confines of physical time. Predestination is only a thought by those who limit God to the confines of physical time.

People freely choose faith, obedience and love for God. Free willed people are judged by Jesus on the last day. Those whom have dutifully followed Jesus and the Father’s instructions will not be struck out of the book of life. Because God is omnipresent to the whole of physical past present and future time, He knows the outcome (the book of life). Still it is human free willed choices to love and obey God which effect Christ’s judgement of us on judgement day.

NAB REV 3:5 **
"The victor will thus be dressed in white, and
I will never erase his name from the book of life
but will acknowledge his name in the presence of my Father and of his angels.

God’s eternal book of those who live eternally. LUK 10:20 REV 13:8 REV 17:8 REV 20:12 REV 20:15 REV 21:27
