Recently I have heard more than one priest use “friends” instead of “disciples” during the Eucharistic Prayer. Is this something new?

No, not new. It is in the Eucharistic Prayer for Masses of Reconciliation I “…he took the cup, filled with wine. Again he gave you thanks, handed the cup to his friends, and said: …”
(Roman Missal, Catholic Book Publishing Co., New York, 1985, page 1124).
It also has “friends” in the Eucharistic Prayers for Mases with Children I, II and III.

I think there are a few that are used for special occasions (for lack of a better word). I noticed our pastor used an unfamiliar Eucharistic Prayer last Sunday. It seemed to emphasize forgiveness, penance, mercy, etc. which would be appropriate for the Lenten season. I think there is also a Eucharistic prayer that can be used for Masses for children.

I am certainly not an authority, though. Just a regular person trying to learn more and grow closer to our heavenly Father.

As noted they are valid for certain specific Masses but should not be used during a regular Sunday Mass.

Yes, there is at least one specifically for Reconciliation which is very suitable for Lent.
