Is there any recorded history of the origins of the Pharisees?

When Jesus was a baby, King Herod the Great was the head honcho, it seemed. By the time he is 30, these Pharisees seem to be in charge, though the Romans are most in charge. I’ve heard that they were usurpers. If so, how did they do it? Did the Romans place them there to manage the Jews, like how Matthew was a tax collector for them (though Pilate feared he would be his head if the Pharisees started a riot)? Come to think of it, if Jesus were in the line of King David, how did his family fall out of power and how did King Herod come to have it before Jesus was born?
