My name is Art and I have been catholic all of my 60 years. I am plagued with scruples and it makes it difficult to function. Everything has mortal sin implications and confession is a true burden resulting in more scruples. My priest, a fine man, is from Nigeria and is difficult to talk to. Sometimes I wish I were another religion where God’s love seems to be strongly taught and not the constant fires of hell. My scruples are creating trouble in my marriage and basically affect my desire to live although it is strong. I really do live a pretty good life an go to mass several times a week. However, I am always examining my conscience to see if I may have committed a mortal sin. This activity can go on for hours and even for days. My life is really not very happy. I wish that we were like other churches in trusting in God’s love. St. Theresa is a doctor of the church and she didn’t like the preachings of God’s anger. When I go to communion, I panic, do I really have mortal sin on my soal? Remember for a scrupulous person almost everything can be mortally wrong. I did read a book that said unless you are absolutely sure beyond a shadow of a doubt that you should go to communion. Who knows? If God’s love is so great why do we always have to jump to confession. The church often mentions perfect contritionm. but who but a Saint like St. Therese can have true perfect contrition? How do you live in a church that you love but promises that unless you jump to confession God is waiting to give you everlasting hell. I couldn’t do that to the person I like the least. Where is God;s mercy? I say this with true respect not to disrespect God.
