I understand that going to Protestant services is a risky business for any Catholic, but I am personally very, very strong in my Catholic faith. But would it be a sin to go to a non-denominational service? (Not in place of Mass, of course!) I only ask because I had to give up my boyfriend, who I still love very much, because neither of us would convert religions and we realize that mixed-religion marriages aren’t generally a good idea because of children. I know there are many different views on this, but I was hoping to get a straight answer as to where the Catholic Church stands on Catholics simply going to another type of service. I read in an old Missal that it was a sin, but I wasn’t sure if that was an old teaching, or if that is still where the Church stands. Just to be clear, I would still attend Mass every Sunday, like I have ever since I was born.
So in other words, can I be Catholic, going to Mass every Sunday, following all the doctrines and dogmas, and be allowed to go to another service?
