ok someone said to me, the idea of right or wrong is just made up by a group of people who got together to keep people in line.

killing is 100% illegal in some countries, while in other countries, executions can be justified if the person did something really bad.

is there such things as right or wrong in this world? or is the world just made up of rules that politicians make in the interest of the entire nation?

I believe there is right and wrong, but that it is based upon what each indiviual believes is right and what is wrong.

It depends on what kind of right and wrong. Morally, there are different moral codes. Most people who follow a religion believe that their moral code came down from the Divine either directly or via a person or persons.

Societally, yes, it is all about a group of people determining what actions can harm society and therefore making those actions illegal or wrong. In the US, and most of Europe, those determinations are made by elected officials responsible to the people who elected them.

There are two sources for determining right and wrong.
  1. It is defined by a higher authority.
  2. It is dictated by those who have the most guns.
Unfortunately, this country seems well on the way to switching from 1 to 2. 😦 From experience in my own family, morality lasts about one generation after one abandons God. The next generation goes for expediency.

There may be two questions here: does morality exist and what what is its source? If, as some claim, morality is merely whatever is functionally beneficial then the entire concept of right and wrong is meaningless and the terms should be replaced with helpful and harmful.

If morality is more than functionality then the argument shifts to its source and here it turns on whether morality can have a source other than God. There are three positions one can take:
  1. Morality exists and God is the source.
  2. Morality exists but the source is other than God.
  3. Morality does not exist.
I’ve never heard a good defense of (2) and while a number of people profess (3) they don’t usually behave as if they actually believe it but those are the only two options if you reject God.

That’s one way of looking at life. Another is that Jesus was the Son of God, and He told us differently. We believe in what *He *said, and nothing else.
