I had my first confession in a year and I received a sheet. I was really nervous during the confession and I messed up the numbers of sins. Since i was reading off the sheet to help me, the sheet didn’t say swearing, only hurting someone physically, or verbally. Does saying that I hurt someone physically and verbally count as confessing I swear? I was panicing a bit and I was thinking of confessing swearing but also confessing other while I was thinking. The amount I swear was very little over th year, it was only around 200, like the major ones like the F word and so on. Does this confession count because I forgot to say swearing instead i generalized it and the numbers were off a bit, for example if i meant to say 200 I would say 190 or 210. Does this confession count?

One is only required to confess mortal sins in kind and number.

Be at peace.

The number was off for a mortal sin, I think it was like around 10 or 20 or so.

All of my confessions were nothing like that. We were just told to say the sin 💀

It’s a splendid confession. If you underestimated, you can always make up the difference.

Did you intentionally lie?

If not, then just say “I was previously confessed doing this X number of times, but I actually did it Y times” at your next confession.

Never in my life. And with confessions with many priests, they have never stopped me to tell me that!

Not with intent, I was panicing, I was trying to make sure no one heard me or amything because I knew there were 10 people around me, all close people and I knew I messed up after but I knew it was too late because the priest was already talking to another

I was also not taught about this! I was taught to tell the priest all the sins that I could remember. Ever since I heard about the kind and number method I’ve thought about trying it, but I almost feel like I wouldn’t be making the confession with enough detail. Grant it I have OCD and have a tendency to be scrupulous. I’m sorry, but do you mind telling me, If I was to do it in this manner, when would I be required to go into more detail?

Can. 988 §1. A member of the Christian faithful is obliged to confess in kind and number all grave sins committed after baptism and not yet remitted directly through the keys of the Church nor acknowledged in individual confession, of which the person has knowledge after diligent examination of conscience.

One must confess any details which change the species of a sin. So e.g. if one committed adultery, it would not be sufficient to say “I committed fornication”, since adultery involves a distinct malice. OTOH, one is not required to confess details that only aggravate a sin without changing its species, and this would be inadvisable if one has scrupulous tendencies. So e.g. if one stole from a poor person, one would not be required to mention the poverty of one’s victim, unless he suffered some special harm.

Confession in kind does not mean that one must explicitly identify the moral species, it only means that one must provide sufficient detail for the priest to identify it. Priests generally know what the requirements for a good confession are, so unless you’re certain that your confession was incomplete, you should not trouble yourself about it.

I don’t think that’s how it works, Colonel…

OP, God knows that you’re sorry for your sins. Being panicked, nervous, forgetful etc. doesn’t invalidate a confession. Only consciously neglecting to mention a sin can invalidate your confession. Sounds like you suffer from scruples. I would suggest that, at your next confession, mention your error to the priest and tell him that you have scruples, so he can help accordingly. God bless.

A confession covers all sins that you did not knowingly withhold … I think you can be at peace.

I assure you. The Old Colonel is completely without scruples.
