Recently, a friend of mine posted this on facebook, along with a photo of two dresses:

“Okay, I HAVE to share an awesome HUGE God moment. I went to Kohls this morning. As I shopped I became discouraged because every item I came across was either extremely short, skin tight, or had a low neckline. I began grumbling in my head about how designers these days make it so hard to shop for modest clothes. Then I said a quick prayer for the fashion industry and continued shopping. Two minutes later I stumble upon two beautiful dresses amongst a rack of pants. The dresses were both 90% off and happened to be my size. Not only do I get two amazing dresses for under $3, but two ladies behind me ask how I found such a great deal, and I got to share my story and the wonderful power of prayer. My God is SO awesome, and He moves when you least expect it!”

Do you think this can really be defined as a miracle? I know I have no business questioning the way God works, or how and when he chooses to dole our miracles. However, it seems strange that He would answer a prayer for a good deal on modest clothing, but seemingly ignore “more important” prayers - those of the sick, starving, persecuted, or otherwise suffering. I’m just find it difficult to imagine that God would prioritize something like shopping over, I don’t know, an entire continent of starving children?

Please don’t think I’m trying to be a jerk. The friend who posted this is one of the kindest, well-meaning people I know. Maybe I should be more like her - finding miracles in everyday life and being a little more optimistic. I’m just confused!

Gods’ providence is always present, He knows our inner most thoughts and desires. Your prayer was a simple one. I always picture God as being rich in every way and always loving no matter what the trials. He is always blessing us especially when we manifest belief in Him. When we pray we are expressing our faith in Him. It is impossible to please God without Faith. I have a saying that captures the answer you’re looking for. It goes “In the name of the Father, the Son and Holy Coincidence”👍

Observing so much suffering in the world has been a stumbling block for many people in believing that God really cares for us. Who has known the mind of the Lord. Our ways are not His ways. If the rich of the world were all charitable and shared their wealth they could relieve the sufferings of the poor. Some do and some don’t. The parable of the rich man and the poor man Lazarus shows what can happen to us by our choices. Corruption is endemic in human nature in need of spiritual help. This is where Christ comes into the picture. By His act of redemption He gave us His Spirit , but we need to turn to Him humbly and accept Him as Our Saviour, Lord and Redeemer, be baptized in His, The Father, and the Holy Spirits name. Then we receive His Holy Spirit who then gives us the virtues of Faith, Hope and Love. All of this is a miracle of grace merited for us by Jesus. When humanity as a whole turns to Him then the sufferings of people will be healed. This is one reason Jesus Christ is called “The Good News” He came to redeem us from the works of Satan" …St. Peter Those who say they love God, and don’t love their fellow man Jesus calls them “Liars”🙂

Little miracles happen all the time. We often miss them because we are looking for something huge. I would say that God did answer this pray for modest clothing. Remember He never ignores our prayers, but sometimes His answer is not one we like. He is not with us to fix everything. He is with us so we can work toward a better way of life and to do some of the fixing according to His Will.

Sometimes God has surprises for us in the most trivial and unspectacular ways.

Some folks see Gods handiwork in every little thing while others do not recognize Him even when He yells in their face. All those poor starving folks in the world are our opportunity to do Gods work. We are His hands. We can perform the miracles to make their lives better.

So when you hear about them and ask why does God not do something about it, look in the mirror God gave you eyes to see their plight and He expects you to do something about it.

HI closet_catholic,

I think that we need to have our mind on God as much as possible. If we can try and do that, then we will start to see Him in many situations. I know that isn’t always easy to do.

I had something similar happen to me years ago, like what happened to your friend at Kohl’s.

I was trying to find a dress for a wedding that we were going to attend. I had ordered one through a catalogue, but it was out-of-stock. It took me awhile to find this out.

It was getting so close to the day of the wedding, that I was getting more discouraged as I shopped for a new dress. I went in to a store that I normally didn’t shop at, and there was “my dress.” The last one on the rack, in my size.

It was perfect. It was modest, and it was tea length. It was a lovely dress, and It was on sale, too. Perfect fit. I was so delighted. I had money left over for a pair of sandals, too.

Our priest would probably say that this is God working wondrously. He feels the word miracle is used too loosely.

Definitely the greatest miracle of our time, I will tell my grandchildren of this story.

Your friends’ belief in prayer was confirmed by the Holy Spirit by giving her an answer to her needs. He is the one who inspires us to pray in the first place. This is called “grace” She prayed for the fashion industry to make modest clothing ( a noble thought, in keeping with the virtue of modesty, in keeping with Gods’ desire for all of us. to be pure in thought and dress) The human body and its biological attractions has been the occasion of many sins and human tragedies) Many times when God wants to confirm an action that is right but we are not sure He has a way to confirm it for us (that still small voice, that inspiration, that Holy Coincidence)🙂

Last year I lost $40.00. I emptied my entire purse and wallet and every pocket in the purse and on me and it was gone. I was quite upset.

A few weeks later I was sitting in the pew with my family for Christmas Midnight Mass and remembered I had not brought an offering. My daughter remarked she had forgotten hers also. We decided to bring it on New Year’s.

I needed a kleenex and opened my purse to get one and there, sitting right on top of everything were two neatly folded $20 bills.

Now I had just been in that purse for keys, etc. on the way to church, so I KNOW there was no money there.

I consider that a miracle. 🙂
