Hi there,

If you make a joke, like if someone is singing and you jokingly tell them they sound like Jesus…is that a mortal sin? Is it considered using the Lord’s name in vain? I feel like it is…but I didn’t really have full intent…

I’d be interested to know how somebody’s singing sounds like Jesus.

I don’t think it would be 🙂 Why do you think it might be?
Well, in religion class we were talking about how you should always put honor, respect to the name of Jesus, and not use it in a frivilous way (2nd commandment). I don’t know. I could very well be being scrupulous right now.

A good priest once told me “Don’t beat yourself up”, because Christ loves you. If you trust in His love, even little sins tend to just melt away.

Come follow Him, and He will give you rest 🙂

I’m curious as to what your intent was. Was your statement made as a compliment – like the person’s voice and the words of the song were so beautiful you could imagine Our Lord singing that song and having a voice similar to theirs? If so, I certainly don’t think there would be any offense.

However, if your intent was more negative, there well could be sin involved. Without full intent it would not be a mortal sin. And what you said and the way you said it may not be considered a grave offense (necessary for it to be a mortal sin), but a less serious offense (a venial sin).

It is obvious there was something about your comment that caused you to be concerned. It may well be your conscience guiding you. I would suggest avoiding making such comments in the future.

If you don’t have full intent then it’s most likely not a mortal sin.

But of course the real answer to your question can only be answered by you and your confessor.
