I was eating with my family this morning, and we were talking about parties my brother has. One of my parents asked me if my brother and his friends were bad at his parties and I didn’t answer. I didn’t really know what to say because they do act bad sometimes but I just didn’t answer the question and someone else at the table started talking. I feel as if I did wrong because I didnt answer the question. Any answers are good thanks.

Keeping silent is neither detracting nor lying. Therefore you are OK.

I am going to disagree with the previous comment. Remember there is something called Omission Sins! What you should have done and you didn’t do. Should you have said something when you were supposed to? That is the question you need to ask your own self.

It would appear that you chose to stay silent rather than lie. As far as I am aware, considering the ‘gravity’ of what the lie would have been, I would personally have considered such a lie a venial sin in any case. Following the same logic, even if you have committed a sin of omission, this would also be venial sin not a mortal sin. In answer to your original question, no I don’t think you have committed a mortal sin. In any case, you can get better advice when you attend confession from the priest, where all sins will be forgiven in any case.

God bless

Its equally wrong to stab your host in the back - give them away etc so you did the right thing in remaining silent.

It doesn’t matter whehter the host is 16 and holding atypical gang party or the host is 36 and holidng a proper posh wedding party or something. It is wrong to talk bad of them so you actually did the right thing in remaining silent.

You would have been indiscrete to say anything otherwise. You chose wisdom to remain silent about what you all get up to. You chose discretion rather than silence. A very useful tool to learn as you get older and you be respected for discretion in the long run.

So, as you didn’t lie you haven’t sinned. You chose silence rather than lie. discretion is the word. If your parents want to know if your brother was bad at a party then they should ask him not you. If you have sinned then so have they in trying to collarborate with you rather than ask your brother direct.
