I was watching Sunday Mass on my computer when I heard a member of my family coming near so I quickly took the video off of full screen and waited to see if they might come into my room had they done so I would of closed the video of Mass down.

Would this be a mortal sin against the first commandment or am I being scrupulous?

if you think it is a mortal sin to close down your computer while you are watching the Mass then yes, you are being scrupulous. Who or what has said something to you to give you these ideas? You need to ask a priest when someone tells you something odd like that.

You are being scrupulous. I don’t think this is even a venial sin. It is certainly not a mortal sin – it is not a willful violation of God’s law. God bless.

The OP must be asking if he sinned when he wanted to cover up that he was watching the Mass. Maybe he feels the sin was the embarrassment.
When I was scrupulous as a teenager I thought the same but now I doubt its a sin.

My examination of conscience says:
Have I been willing to affirm, defend and practice my faith in public and not just in private?

That’s why I ask.

If you wish to defend your Faith, then you should practice sticking to your guns, so to speak. But that is not something that comes easy. It takes practice. You did not commit a mortal sin, but you did allow something to come between you and the education you were getting by watching a Mass.

Don’t be too hard on yourself over this. It takes a great deal of effort and self-training to begin defending and practicing your Faith publicly.

There are a couple things that make me curious (and don’t feel like you have to answer these):

-How old are you?
-Is your family Catholic, or just you? How is religion viewed in your family?
-Was this watching of the Mass in addition to your Sunday obligation?

There is no sin to shut it off for anything.
I can think of some things that it would be a sin if it were not shut off.

Discuss this with your confessor. He can ask you questions to help determine if you sinned here. And guide you with his advice for what one should do or not do in the future.

You are right to seek to live the faith…to follow Christ as his disciple! He loves you. Let us live in him…in him is our* true life.*

Make sure you read the messages from world youth day with Pope Benedict XVI 🙂
