Good Afternoon Everyone,

So to keep it short and to the point, I am a little confused. I wear a “bracelet” known as a “Brojanica” or a Prayer Rope on my left wrist.

I was visiting my inlaws and I think there was a wet patch on the couch where my hand and wrist may have accidentally touched and it could have been cat pee. They insist the cat doesn’t pee inside and that to be honest, the house did not smell horrible like cat pee.

I went to wash my hands and ofcourse the prayer rope bracelet and over and over again.

What I want to know is do you think it is disrespectful for me to keep the bracelet on and pray with it on if it indeed did touch something unclean like cat pee?

No, but I would feel a bit gross about it. Can you just replace it?

If it was cat pee, you would have smelled it.

You think maybe the wet spot was condensation from someone’s drink that they were holding while sitting on the couch?

Disrespecting something or someone is intentional. It requires you to deliberately do something to convey disrespect. Even if it was cat pee, it’s not like you deliberately rubbed it in urine. It was an accident. It would be no different than accidentally dropping a Bible into a mud puddle or something.

That said, it might be gross. But it’s not disrespectful.

And there you go.

Your hands touch many disgusting things in life and you wash your hands of them. You receive communion with those same hands and think nothing of it. I think if you washed the bracelet and it is odor free of whatever it was in, there is nothing gross or disrespectful about wearing it.

Do you have OCD? I do. And if so, you shouldn’t ask for reassurance for compulsions. It does more harm than good.

Just wash it in some vinegar and water solution which will neutralize any pee. (You can then wash it again with a little pleasant smelling detergent to remove the vinegar odor.) And carry on.

I have cats and honestly if I made a big fuss every time some of their excrement got on something and needed to be cleaned, I’d be fussing all the time.

Also, if you think it’s bad with cats and dogs, wait till you have babies and toddlers.

Edited to add, I agree with DeniseNY about the OCD also. Needing to wash over and over when the item isn’t dirty or smelly may be a sign of some mental disturbance beyond normal cleanliness.

Different people have a different tolerance for dirt, suspected cat pee, etc. 🤣

@mkorthodox

You did not intend to expose the bracelet to anything.
You washed your hands and the bracelet over and over.
You have done nothing disrespectful.

Maybe use some vinegar or some other kind of cleanser, and then do not worry about it.

The likelihood of it’s being cat pee is really low because if cats pee somewhere other than where they are supposed to, it’s usually in some hidden place on the floor.

You were reassured that it was not cat pee. It didn’t smell like cat pee. And yet you reacted as if it definitely were, and out of proportion for if it were by washing your hands and bracelet “over and over again.”

If this sort of thing happens in other areas of your life, I would definitely suggest a counselor, who could help you see things more realistically and have a less worried life.
