Say you want to be entertaining so you make a comment that probably might motivate people to join the occult. Is this purposefully and indirectly promoting the occult and if so, is this involvement in it?

If you have reason to believe that the person will actually engage in occultic practises as a result of your comment, then you would technically be involving yourself in the occult by counsel or by provocation, depending on the depth of what you’ve said.

It’s hard to know the answer to the question without knowing exactly what was said and the context.
For example, if I tell you to “go jump in a lake” (which is a common English expression meaning "get outta here… you’re kidding me… etc), then that is not really telling somebody to go jump in a lake. If they actually do… well, then… there are different issues there.

in what possible way could an innocent comment in the spirit of amusement or entertainment possible for one moment motivate anyone to get involved in the occult? do you really think your friends hang on your every word that they would react this way to a comment of yours?

But when one thinks about it, would this situation be involvement or would it be promotion. I think there is a nuance here -promotion of a sin is not to perform that sin (perhaps it is to perform another sin though). Whereas involvement (in connection with the occult too) which is called sinful is to actually do that thing which is prohibited. So is this promotion or involvement -is there a difference?

Please give us an example of what you might say that would raise such a question otherwise your opening post is simply a vague generalisation that nobody understands.

I’m thinking what if someone said that, “Satan is funny” (or something) and the other person, who is really interested in funny stuff, decides to go out and get interested in Satan.
If the person knew that would be the likely outcome, would that person be involved in the occult (which, I think, is the sin of practicing the occult proper) or would it be a promotion of the occult (which I think, is simply the sin of promoting something you think is really evil/goes against your conscience)?

what did you say to whom under what circumstances?
Unless you are involved in the occult and urged others who are under your influence and who follow your lead to also become involved I would have a hard time seeing your problem.
did you encourage everyone to check their horoscope in the daily paper, or did you invite a psychic to your party to give tarot readings?

I’m not sure if this is either an unclear example or this is something only the scrupulous worry about. Jokes like that strike me more along the lines of “Join the Dark Side. We have cookies” sort of thing. It may sound bad but it’s not really something most people take seriously.

essentially those are the circumstances, jokes to people about things which are bad (in this case the occult) but which, the other person (who doesn’t know they are bad) might then imitate. If you do this knowingly, did you involve yourself with the occult or something else or did you promote it?

I’m not sure we ever really got to what was concerning you, exactly. if you are joking about satan or the occult, just stop. then you won’t have to worry about whether you are encouraging someone to do what they should not.
you should also visit with your priest about the specifics of your situation.

If I ever make a “joke” or sarcastic comment about the occult, I make sure that its negativity is brought to attention - so, in reality, I suppose that it’s not really joking around but condemnation phrased in a humorous way. Attributing positive qualities to the occult would be wrong, in any case - no doubt about it.
If it was simply a well-intended joke, and the people around you clearly understood this, then it should be fine - though making it a habit would be questionable. After all, sorcery and the like are no joking matter. We should try to avoid it, as with all sinful issues.
