Is this new twist on Gospel readings allowed?

Recently, our Church began doing the Gospel readings with multiple readers, including the Priest, Deacon, lector and sometimes music leader, doing (for lack of a better term) parts. The Deacon is usually the narrator, the Priest reads any qoute that Jesus spoke, and the others read any quotes not attributed to Jesus. I know this is common for the Passion of Christ, but I have never before seen or heard of this. Is this something new or is this even an acceptable practice? My understanding is that only the Priest or Deacon may do the gospel readings except for the Passion. I searched the Catechism but could not find anything specific to this.

Hi,

This seems to be the current novelty. Other than the reading of the passion in Holy Week, the Gospel at Mass is to be read only by a cleric, i.e., a deacon, priest or bishop. Courage, this too will pass.

It is truly tragic that the liturgy is so manipulated at whim.
