Is this really a rule of Lent?

Having a debate with my in-laws regarding the rules of the Lent – they say that if you are fifty miles or more away from the church during Lent that you are excused and are allowed to eat meat. Is this correct?
 
It’s not a rule of which I have heard. I recommend politely asking them to provide evidence from Church documents substantiating their position.
