If I were to buy computer equipment through the online Dell Business Store in order to save money, even though I am not buying it for a business, but for personal use, is that lying/stealing? A near-identical item in the Home store is around $300 more. It seems crazy to pay $300 more for essentially the same exact item just because I am not a businessman.

I’m tempted to say ‘no’ unless you misrepresent yourself in some way but I can’t be certain.

The website requests a “company name” when you try to checkout. Other than that I do not see any kind of statement from Dell that purchases must be made by businesses.

In the case of educational discounts, I could see that it would be stealing if say, a business purchases an item at a discount because they falsely claim to be from an educational institution. But the circumstance I have laid out in the first post in this thread is not the same situation. Suppose I tutor once in a while to make extra cash – does that make me a “small business” suddenly?

I’m just curious, what are you trying to buy? Just thought I’d ask. Why don’t you call Dell and ask one of the reps if you can get the discount? I have heard that their customer service is wonderful (though I do my own thing with computers, so I don’t deal with companies any more). You might be surprised that they are willing to give you the discount anyway. They want repeat customers, and that means keeping you happy. Give it a try.

Turns out Dell said no, because you have to provide a tax ID when you buy the item, which I found strange. Oh well.
