Is this valid in the consecration?

My mom went to Mass and had a question about something that happened during the consecration. The priest said the consecration in the following order: the blood, the bread, and then the blood again. It threw her off and she wanted to make sure this didn’t somehow invalidate that consecration. The priest is a fairly old (80) monsignor and I thought he just had a bit of a senior moment, but my mom said he always tells them that he learned never to say the Mass by memory, to always read the words, so as never to make a mistake!

If he said the right words with the right intention, then the consecration was valid, even though it might have been out of order. I have no doubt that he simply got on the wrong track, realized it, and then backed up to make sure he got it right.

The regular order is to follow the institution narrative and that goes with bread first and chalice of the blood second. Probably the priest got ahead of himself, that happens even when you read, and then he realized what happened and he started again. The consecration was valid.

I’d say it is valid, an honest mistake from an elderly priest.

I love it when older priests still say mass, even if they just assist a younger priest. When I was younger (~10 years ago), I occasionally went to a parish for weekday masses where the pastor would say a mass. Then an elderly priest (91 or 93 years old, cant remember) would arrive with a relative to say another mass and some people would stay for a second one. He had to be helped up to the altar and with sitting down in his chair. He sometimes would fall into a very light whisper and then would raise his voice to a near shouting level, as he was unable to hear very well. He always held on to the altar for dear life when doing the consecration. But through all this I as well as those who witnessed these masses were amazed at his complete and utmost faith. Even in his last year of life, when he could not do much more he still insisted at sharing in the holy sacrifice of the mass.
