I must write a lab report, and at the beginning I must state a hypothesis. If I forgot to make a hypothesis before I began the lab, would it be a sin to make up a hypothesis now so I won’t get points taken off my lab.

No. I don’t think so. Especially if you had the hypothosis in mind but just didn’t write it down.

But did you really just forget? Or did you think it would be easier to come up with a good hypothosis once you saw how the lab was going?

I didn’t have a hypothesis in my head. I really forgot, but I don’t know whether this would be wrong or not.

You could always explain what happened and ask your teacher. If they end up taking off points anyways, you know that you’ll probably just have to accept that. They may however admire your honesty and let it slide. Morally, I doubt you can go wrong with this approach.

This has happened to me once or twice before. I just thought about how I would’ve responded before I did the lab. What did I think was going to happen? If I don’t know what I would’ve thought, then I look at what happened. If any of the data surprised me, I obviously wasn’t expecting that, so I make my hypothesis based around that.
