Is using Reddit a sin?

I use Reddit as a source of entertainment, but the front page is often full of leftist media - not only relating to news stories, but also a plethora of impure imagery (which I obviously avoid)

Is subjecting myself to this sort of content knowingly a sin? After all, every time I go to Reddit I’m placed into a minefield of hot asian girls and marijuana use - but there is also content that I like.

I’ve tried filtering subreddits out but the influence of these impure subreddits seeps into all of the larger ones. Because of this, if I want to truly avoid this content it’s better to just avoid Reddit altogether.

So my question is: Should I stop using Reddit? Or am I just worrying too much?

Reddit is full of sub reddits about specific subjects. Just go to the specific sub forums about subjects you find interesting, if the main page makes you uncomfortable.

When i go to reddit it is usually straight to the forums i find interesting, like the ones about true crimes or unresolved mysteries or music subjects. There is even a sub forum about Catholicism.

It is possible to make Reddit clean(er) by using things like filtering all NSFW content by default (might need Reddit Enhancement Suite for that) and sticking to very select subreddits. With that said, the comments section can still be a minefield no matter where you go. The site may not be sinful itself, but depending on where you are, it can certainly fall under near occasion of sin.

Personally, I’ve gone back and forth recently about whether I should leave the site altogether or if a massive purge of the subreddits I’m subscribed to would be enough. On the whole, I’ve found the site to be a major vector for temptation, but I’ve always found the animal-themed and “safe-for-work porn” network safe. And no, the “safe-for-work porn” network is not literal porn.

When I go on Reddit, I search for particular content and avoid the main page.
If you find yourself adrift and clicking on things you’d rather not (I know I have…and stumbled into some scary places that’s for sure), avoid that main page as it may be “the near occasion of sin” for you.

Picture the Reddit main oage like visiting a large city: you can purposely hang out in the art museums, the churches, the movies, etc., or you can wander around and maybe end up in the red light district and risk the tempations to wander in.

Assuming you’re not looking (beyond the glance as you pass the front page or even skip the front page) at impure content or anything else that makes you personally want to commit a sin, you’re worrying too much.

By the way, I don’t know what you consider “leftist media”, but unless reading it is going to cause you personally to commit a sin, such as quit the Church or go ballistic cussing out the author, looking at “leftist media” is generally not a problem. I know I can spend all day looking at leftist articles and marijuana propaganda and the only thing that would happen would be me getting very bored very fast.

You’re just one user to Reddit that’s all :man_shrugging:t2:

Why do people act people who lean politically left are from the devil? Gees. This whole evil liberal narrative seems is rather tiring.

Honestly, unless you specifically search for bad reddit sections I fail to see how it could possibly be a sin. I usually get there by doing google searches and the info people provide is usually really good. They got music stuff, bodybuilding stuff, local stuff, cooking stuff, you name it! 🙂

I don’t use it that often, but I never have seen any impure images on it. Like anything else if you are using it with with impure intentions yes, it could be considered possibly as sinful. If you are using it for non-sexual stuff no.

When I want to set myself up for a fall, I will start looking at stuff I know to be risky. I look for things that most likely contain words or pictures that are titillating. Then suddenly wham! I am on a downward slope. That is how my falls begin.

On occasion I can still see something unplanned, and get into deep water, but not as much if I keep up with a daily prayer for purity. Really, most of this is about self honesty. Hope this helps.

One thing I note about the new Reddit front page is that it’s going to put up content it thinks will interest you based on what you’ve been reading on there from before. So if you’re getting impure content at this point, it’s based on your own reading and browsing habits.
