A friend wants to counter a non-catholic in-law who insists wine is not encouraged in the bible for enjoyment. I can only think of the wedding at Cana and the above title but I don’t know where to find it or any other references. Please help!

Hi,

I detect some Protestant influences here. Jews and Catholics are quite comfortable with wine.

In Psalm 104:14-15 “You make the grass grow for the cattle and the plants to serve man’s needs, that he may bring forth bread from the earth AND WINE TO CHEER MAN’S HEART;”

In Ecclesiastes 2:24: "There is nothing better for mortals than to eat and drink, and find enjoyment in their toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God.:

As you mentioned, Jesus used wine at a wedding to work His first miracle and the behest of His mother; John 2.

So highly did Jesus consider wine, that He used it when He instituted the Eucharist (Mt. 26:27) “Then He took the cup, and after giving thanks He gave it to them, saying, 'Drink from it, all of you; for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”

The Lord was never suspicious of the goodness of His creation–nor is His Church.
