Hello,

I have been working hard to get good result for my work to get compliments from my friends, make my parents proud and be the best in my class.

I was wondering is that a sin of pride and is it a mortal sin?

Please help

Anthony, there is nothing wrong with working hard and making your parents proud, but you shouldn’t strive for the validation of others.
I really think you are being too scrupulous and overanalyzing things.
Here are a series of videos describing and discussing the sin of pride just for information.

All the best,
Benedicat Te Omnipotens Deus

“Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him (Jesus) . But because of the Pharisees they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue; for they loved human praise more than praise from God.” (John 12:42-43)

Now obviously quite a different situation here than what you are going through but we can learn a lot.
  1. It is bad when you desire human praise MORE than praise from God
  2. It is bad when desiring human praise leads you to actions that CONTRADICT what God wants you to do
If you are seeking praise from others and this negatively affects the time you would spend seeking God, in prayer, or if it affects your mindset to a point where you care about pleasing men MORE than pleasing God than it is bad.

“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:17)

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
(1 Corinthians 10:31)

Our purpose is to glorify God and please Him, if this aligns with also pleasing your parents (remember it’s one of the Ten Commandments to honor your parents) then go for it! But if getting compliments from your friends takes priority over God’s judgement of you, that is very bad. Best wishes, you’re in my prayers!

Also, pride is generally bad so try to stay away from that. The only boasting we should do is to “boast in the Lord”

(Jeremiah 9:24) “but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,” declares the Lord.”

2 Corinthians 10:17-18 “ But, “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.” For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.”

You’ve asked this question 3 times in 3 days.

Time to get off the internet and talk to your parents and your pastor about your difficulties discerning when something is a sin.
