“Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him (Jesus) . But because of the Pharisees they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue; for they loved human praise more than praise from God.” (John 12:42-43)
Now obviously quite a different situation here than what you are going through but we can learn a lot.
- It is bad when you desire human praise MORE than praise from God
- It is bad when desiring human praise leads you to actions that CONTRADICT what God wants you to do
If you are seeking praise from others and this negatively affects the time you would spend seeking God, in prayer, or if it affects your mindset to a point where you care about pleasing men MORE than pleasing God than it is bad.
“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:17)
“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
(1 Corinthians 10:31)
Our purpose is to glorify God and please Him, if this aligns with also pleasing your parents (remember it’s one of the Ten Commandments to honor your parents) then go for it! But if getting compliments from your friends takes priority over God’s judgement of you, that is very bad. Best wishes, you’re in my prayers!
