Isaac and Genesis

Do you see a paralell between Isaac carrying the wood up the mountain for the sacrifice and Christ going up the mountain with the cross to be sacrificed?

I always thought perhaps there was something of a parallel, especially considering that Isaac is spared by God and Jesus is raised by God.

Yeah it’s really interesting to me. I have been studying Genesis closely and have learned a lot. Reading about Melchizedek’s priesthood with offerings of bread and wine is fascinating as well. I can’t help to wonder how much before the New Testament this book was written. Does anyone know or have an educated guess?

Also, Jewish tradition holds that since a young boy could not carry enough wood to burn a human body; that Isaac was likely about 30 years old…

The OT and NT have all kinds of parallels, and even parallels within the gospel…one of my favorites is, “Conceived in a virgin womb, and buried in a virgin tomb”.

Don’t forget the ones between Eve and Mary.
.Eve prompted Adam to sin, but Mary prompted Jesus to do His first glorious act,
.Eve and original sin, Mary conceived with no original sin…the list goes on and on

Note in both cases a father was sacrificing his only son.

13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns; and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.

Genesis 22:13 The lamb that was sacrificed was hung on a bush or tree; somewhat analogous to being crucified.

The biggest parallel is taught to us by the author of Hebrews.

***By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was ready to offer up his only son, of whom it was said, “Through Isaac shall your descendants be named.” He considered that God was able to raise men even from the dead; ** (Hebrews 11:17-19) *

Both Abraham and Jesus trusted that God would raise a son from the dead. That’s the most profound parallel.

And that’s why Abraham is called the Father of Faith. He was the first one to trust God. Even Adam and Eve didn’t trust God.

The Bible is a story of God teaching humanity to trust him. Thge Bible is about trust.

Well there is certainly a parallel there. In fact, there is this Christian legend which states that the mountain in Moriah (where Abraham and Isaac went) and Calvary are the same location. Now this isn’t entirely accurate, since the traditional Golgotha (where the Church of the Holy Sepulchre now stands) is hardly a mountain or even a hill at all (contrary to the popular idea of ‘Mount Calvary’) and since the mountain is identified with the Temple Mount in Jewish tradition (cf. 2 Chronicles 3:1). But nevertheless the idea is still there: Isaac is a type of Christ.
