Hello everyone,

I had a question about this verse. What my research has led me to believe is that this verse is foreshadowing the church bring about the conversions of gentiles, and also a “symbol” of Mary giving birth to Christ. So my question is, since Mary was immaculate in her own conception, thus without original sin, wouldn’t she not have expierenced any pain during the birth of christ? If so, would this not be “just a symbol?”

Also I think the Roman Catechism teaches that Christ passed through her “as sunlight passes through glass.”

Am I correct in my assumption there?

Yes, Christ passed through her light sun passes through glass, thus preserving her virginity.

Notice in Genesis, that because of Eve’s Sin, God would “intensify your toil in childbearing”. Hence there would need to be “some toil” in order to “intensify your toil”.

The problem is, however, that I’ve read sources that have made both claims. Mary had some pain during delivery, and that Mary did not suffer at all.

Unless I’m mistaken, I would take any stock in anyone that “definitively claims” that Mary went suffered or didn’t suffer. To me, its one of those “how many angels can dance on the head of a pin” type of question.

Here’s what the verse says* :

Before being in labor,
she brought forth a child.
Before feeling the pain,
*she brought forth a boy. *

Put the whole thing into context. The following verses speak of of bringing forth a country or a nation :

When did one ever see
something of this kind?
Does one bring forth a country
in only one day?

So this passage talks about the return from exile, so unexpected and so happy*.*

As for the painless birth of Jesus, the doctrine of the Church is that Mary was a virgin before during and after the birth. Does this cover the pain? It is certainly a widely held belief. Pope John Paul II said that Mary’s birth pains were on Calvary where she brought forth the Christian people as Jesus said, “Behold your mother, behold your son.”
