Islam and predestination

On page 58 of God and the World, then Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger says Islam seems to proceed from a strict notion of predestination: everything is predestined and I live in a ready-woven web. The Cardinal acknowledges that he is no specialist in Islam (nor am I certainly) but I know some pious Muslims and have spoken about their religion with them. This is not my impression. Help from readers of CA, please.
 
yes i too know that they believe in full predestination.

When you quote the following tradition about how Adam affected the other generation, Muslim tend to deny what it says for the sake of predestination:

Volume 8, Book 77, Number 611:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, “Adam and Moses argued with each other. Moses said to Adam. ‘O Adam! You are our father who disappointed us and turned us out of Paradise.’ Then Adam said to him, 'O Moses! Allah favored you with His talk (talked to you directly) and He wrote (the Torah) for you with His Own Hand. Do you blame me for action which Allah had written in my fate forty years before my creation?’ So Adam confuted Moses, Adam confuted Moses,” the Prophet added, repeating the Statement three times.

I always looked upon it as al-lah ‘wills’ things and it’s totally up to him and even a pious Moslem won’t know that he’ll go to heaven, because al-lah seems to will something things, and not others - it’s totally at al-lah’s will.

This is not predestination, though.
 
Hello ,

I am a muslim.

Islam doesnt believe in forced actions. We believe in Free will . Thus we believe we are accounted for our actions. However ew believe in Gods knoowledge before hand of our actions and thoughts.

I hope you will note the difference . Supreme Knowledge is to God. For us it is our own free will.
