Islamic academy revises controversial textbooks

[In recent years, there have been questions about the nature of the instruction at the Islamic Academy in Alexandria, Va. The school, which has close ties to the Saudi government, was founded in 1984 but came under outside scrutiny only after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Since then, there have been charges that the school’s textbooks teach intolerance. Last year, the US Commission on International Religious Freedom released a report detailing passages from the school’s textbooks that say it is permissible for Muslims to kill adulterers and converts from Islam. Another passage highlighted said that, “the Jews conspired against Islam and its people.”

Now the school has revised its texts to promote more tolerance, according to school officials.

But a report by the Associated Press today questions whether the school has gone far enough. The AP says the new textbooks “disparage” Christians and Jews for not accepting Islam, quoting from an 11th-grade textbook that says, “Scholars of the People of the Book know that Islam is the true path because they find it in their books. But the school’s director, Abdulrahman Alghofaili, told the AP that claims by Muslims to “set themselves apart as singular representatives of divine truth and the path to salvation” are no different from those of Christians and Jews.

The passage in the textbook, he told the AP, is no different from the First Commandment, which states, “You shall have no other gods before me.”

Alghofaili also said that the changes were intended to modernize the texts and not to appease outside critics.

I am sure this rhetoric has been said over and over again on CAF.

What sad people. No, Mr. Alghofaili, your religion’s claims are NOT the same as those of the Christians, because their religion was not founded on the premise that what had been revealed previously was false (or, rather, became false over time because somehow God did not care to preserve His words from those who would tamper with them, even though the Bible says exactly that). And why would the Jews have to make any such claim, either? They are not a proselytizing religion to begin with. They know that they are the chosen people of God no matter what your religion says about them, just as Christians know that Jesus Christ is God no matter what your religion says about that, too!

Islam would have a much easier time defending itself if it did not insist that it knows more about other faiths than the followers of those faiths do. It wouldn’t have taken much to figure out what is wrong with this situation, if Mr. Alghofaili would dare to be honest with himself about his religion, rather than trying to place it on the same level as Christianity and Judaism whenever anyone actually notices the triumphalist B.S. that Muslims regularly trot out when they think that no one is paying attention. “Oh, no, no, guys…we’re just like you! Don’t worry, everybody. Here, have some tea, my friend…”

Quite frankly Christian scripture is more anti-semitic.

The quran itself is not particularly anti-semitic (there are a few exceptions)

Its the ahadith that are disturbingly and virulently anti-semitic.

But why stop there, they are also horrendously sexist - cannot imagine why any woman would join a faith that claims that her gender are the majority in hell.

Sura (5:80) - “You will see many of them befriending those who disbelieve; certainly evil is that which their souls have sent before for them, that Allah became displeased with them and in chastisement shall they abide.” Those Muslims who befriend unbelievers will abide in hell.

Sura (3:28) - “Let not the believers Take for friends or helpers Unbelievers rather than believers: if any do that, in nothing will there be help from Allah…”

Sura (3:118) - “O you who believe! do not take for intimate friends from among others than your own people, they do not fall short of inflicting loss upon you; they love what distresses you; vehement hatred has already appeared from out of their mouths, and what their breasts conceal is greater still; indeed, We have made the communications clear to you, if you will understand.” This verse not only warns Muslims not to take non-Muslims as friends, but it establishes the deep-seated paranoia that the rest of the world is out to get them.

Sura (9:23) - “O ye who believe! Choose not your fathers nor your brethren for friends if they take pleasure in disbelief rather than faith. Whoso of you taketh them for friends, such are wrong-doers” Even family members are not to be taken as friends if they do not accept Islam. (This is the mildest interpretation of this verse from the 9th Sura, which also advocates “slaying the unbeliever wherever ye find them”).

Sura (53:29) - “Therefore shun those who turn away from Our Message and desire nothing but the life of this world.”

Sura (3:85) - “And whoever desires a religion other than Islam, it shall not be accepted from him, and in the hereafter he shall be one of the losers.”

Sura (3:10) - “(As for) those who disbelieve, surely neither their wealth nor their children shall avail them in the least against Allah, and these it is who are the fuel of the fire.” Those who do not believe in Muhammad are but fuel for the fire of Hell (also 66:6, 2:24. 21:98).

Sura (7:44) - "The Companions of the Garden will call out to the Companions of the Fire: “We have indeed found the promises of our Lord to us true: Have you also found Your Lord’s promises true?” They shall say, “Yes”; but a crier shall proclaim between them: “The curse of Allah is on the wrong-doers” Muslims in heaven will amuse themselves by looking down on non-Muslims in Hell and mocking them while they are being tortured (see 22:19-22.

Sura (1:5-7) - “Show us the straight path, The path of those whom Thou hast favoured; Not the (path) of those who earn Thine anger nor of those who go astray” This is a prayer that Muslims are supposed to repeat each day. “Those who earn Thine anger” specifically refers to Jews and “those who go astray” refers to Christians (see Bukhari (12:749)).
