Hi, With love and respect…I’m sure you will have discussed the issue of coeliacs and the host, that in Canon Law it must be wheat flour and water. I respect that those who set up the law wished to prevent anything inappropriate, but Jesus Himself made no statement about it. It seems to me that Jesus’ intention was to make use of a basic food that would be in everyday uses everywhare known. It seems to me that this was the spirit of Jesus intention. The framers of Canon Law did not know about coeliac disease. Would it not be more in the spirit of Jesus’ intention to reframe the Law stipulating simply, pure grain four and water. Jesus was never favourably impressed when the Jewish leaders of the time followed the letter of the Law slavishly and forgot the spirit of the Law. When I was a child, it was a mortal sin to eat meat on Friday, now it isn’t. It is surely less serios to expand the idea of grain. Jesus shared barley loaves, which is also poison to Coeliacs. I can’t imagine Jesus wishing to make the sharing of The Eucharist difficult for anyone simply because some grains cause autoimmune responses and cause illness. I’m not discussing low gluten hosts that are expensive for individuals to buy, at least for those who like me just scrape by financially. That is another issue. I believe the question I ask is honest and has merit, concerning the letter of the Law and the spirit of the Law. Bless you, Trishie
