We’ll have to agree to disagree. The church does not assign an exact percentage for giving. Nor, do they tell me what organization within the church that I have to give to.
The blind obedience here is scary. It is this type of thinking which kept the american priest sex scandal hidden for so long.
The canon is very clear, you must support your “particular church”. That is your diocese. Since your parish is part of the diocese and each parish pays a tax to the diocese, supporting your parish is probably sufficient. No one said it tells you how much to give. The precept of the church tells you “according to your ability”, it says nothing about “if you like your bishop’s political views”.I’ll follow the bishops on teachings of dogma/faith, but the rest is less ‘cut & dry’.
This is not blind obediance. This is following church law. I would hazard a guess that those who understand these rules are much less likely to suffer from “blind” obediance and understand quite well the limits of a Bishop’s authority and infallibility. Following the rules and showing respect to a Bishop’s teaching, (perhaps by reading what they say before opposing them), is not blind obediance.
