I have been struggling with depression for the past year while dealing with some failures in my life. A lot of people of told me to not worry that God has a plan for everyone. I have also heard people say that God has given everyone a unique skill, ability, etc… So going off of this, why is it worth even trying to do something for which you were not naturally given the ability as it would seem counter to God’s plan. For example, say if God gave me the ability to be the best computer programmer but terrible athletic abilities. However my true desire was to be a soccer player but no matter how hard I tried it was just not what I was cut out for. So going off of this, why should we even bother trying to do something which might be outside of our natural ability or skill?

We do things because we enjoy them, not because we are necessarily great at them.

God gave you great programming skills that you can earn a living with. He gave you a love of soccer to have fun and relax with.

I am sorry for your depression, I hope that you will look into some counseling if your depression has been going on for a while or is more than you can handle. And of course, put it into God’s hands and trust his will for you.

Praying to St. Peregrine for your health & recovery.

Yes, life is very hard. “Poor banished childred of Eve, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears”.

Yes, Christ says, come to me all ye who labor. Everything passes. True riches is not in having things, but in desiring nothing.

Think of this life as driving through a dense, incomprehensible fog, or a confused and bad dream- but when you get through it, there is Heaven. Christ promised- “Blessed are ye that mourn”. Hold Him to that promise. Nothing else matters.

My advice is: practise detachment. We have here no abiding city. Let it go- earthly hopes, earthly desires. Our hearts will not rest until they rest in God…

Thanks for the replies. I guess I am just wondering if we control our own destinies. Also I don’t wish for money or power. I would like to just be happy and feel that I am doing something good.

You have free will and that means you get to choose how you will choose to react, live with or take on everyone else’s free will too. 🙂
