umm…can one of you experianced and knowledgeable brethern please tell me what “meet” means in the context of eastern traditional prayers? (i.e. It is truly meet to bless thee, the Theotokos,…) I mean I am sure it’s something good, but does someone know exactly what I am declaring by saying, it is meet?
😊

Another translation for ‘it is meet’ would be ‘it is right’ or ‘it is fitting’ - so it means ‘appropriate’ or ‘proper’ or some such.

Its not just the Eastern Church which uses the phrase “It is meet and just.” Anglicans do also. Its Elizabethan English for “proper.”

Dignum is the Latin from which “meet” is translated. Think the word “dignity”, “dignified”.

It can sound a little odd to my ears also. The same Anglican Priest who I knew that used that phrase also asked about my family - “How’s your git?” 😃

Meet in this context means fitting or proper.

It appears in the non-word “helpmeet”, which is NOT the archaic spelling of the other non-word “helpmate” but aa misreading of two separate words “help” and “meet”–an appropriate and suitable helper.

And of course, these parts of prayers are not allowed during Lent, when no meet is to be used.😛
