The catholic belief is that the Bible contains the Word of God. It is the Words that are sacred not the paper and ink (or other media) that make them visible.

The closet statements on this topic from the Church is that it is not appropriate to use an I-Pad or similar device instead of a proper Missal on the altar from which to Say Mass (except in extremity). - this applies to the Priest not to the Laity (Who don’t say mass).

It is Good to have a Bible which you treat with respect because of the Word Of God which it contains. It is good that is not be mundane, paperback that is the same as the novels and textbooks on your bookshelf.
It is good that The bible should take pride of place and be special. It is good to give your bible and your prayer book(s) a leather cover or in other ways make it special or different.

It is not a sin to not do these things.

It is most definitely not a sin to use on-line tools to make it easier to read the Word of God in your daily life.

Here on this forum we have a tool to use just such a tool.
the tool comes from www.veritasbible.com

it lets us paste a bible reference into a post from either the Douay-Rheims or the Vulgate.
like this
[bibledrb] John 1: 1-4 [/bibledrb]

if this was a sin, the owners of this website would not have given us this function. They are knowledgeable and careful about things like that.

I pasted the above by typing [noparse][bibledrb] John 1: 1-4 [/bibledrb][/noparse]

You can find out more by looking at bb codes in “Help” from the top menus.

Just as a heads up, this post does not belong in the World News forum. I anticipate that the moderator will move it some time today.

Having said that, I would be careful about using a “daily bible quotes” toolbar. Most of this type of thing comes out of the evangelical / fundamentalist community – many of whom are very anti-Catholic in their interpretation of the Scriptures. Most use a Protestant version of the BIble (particularly the KJV)…which can be problematic in places. And if Protestant (evangelical / fundamentalist) commentaries are linked to the Scripture quotes, they can be EXTREMELY problematic in their interpretation.

For online Scriptures, I would recommend first and foremost Biblia Clerus (clerus.org/bibliaclerus/index_eng.html). This is published by the Holy See – Congregation for the Clergy and links to documents of the Church Fathers and to documents of the Magisterium. You can use either the web version at the link above, or there is a downloadable version that you can install to your Windows PC.

Also, see the USCCB website: (usccb.org/bible/) for an online version of the New American Bible. They also have each day’s Mass readings.

Also, see the Divine Office website (divineoffice.org/) for an online Liturgy of the Hours (which contains the daily Office…a large amount of Scripture reading within those prayers). If you would like to have a version for the Smartphone, I suggest iBreviary (ibreviary.com/new/index_en.html). There are links for iPhone, Android, and Blackberry apps from that site.

I would concur with Markomalley about being careful about the source of the software or tools you are using.
There are many good Catholic sources out there without needing to expose yourself to the possible attacks on your faith that could come from some of the other sources out there.

It’s totally fine to use it! 🙂 In fact, I tend to use the online Bible quite often because I’m online so much!

Why exactly would you think it should be a sin to have an online Bible?

There is nothing wrong, theologically speaking, with using an online Catholic Bible. I use the USCCB’s online Bible quite frequently when I’m online. I also have the iBreviary app on my Blackberry, and use that at Mass if a missalette isn’t within reach and I’ve forgotten my hardcopy missal.

There are some practical issues, though, which have nothing to do with faith. A second caution I’d like to add about an online Bible is this, and it’s not a real issue if you are working on a high speed connection, such as at your home computer that is connected to a DSL line or a cable. However, if you are using a mobile device, these are HUGE data-rich applications. In other words, unless you have an unlimited data plan, or found a wi-fi hotspot, you will get hit with data overage charges, and they will be huge if you used the app every day:mad: For that kind of money, you could get yourself a beautiful, leather bound, gilt-edged page, fully illustrated bound Bible with money left over.

Now, you might think that a big data overage charge on your cell phone bill is a “sin!”😃

The iBreviary app on the Blackberry is a real battery-guzzler. I don’t know what it does to the battery on other devices, but there have been a few times when I did not exit and CLOSE the app, and found myself with a dead phone an hour later.

If it was a sin to use an online catholic bible, catholic priests would never put a catholic bible online… 🤷

Right. The Bible is on the Vatican website and the USCCB website. If it were a sin, we’d all be in big trouble! 😛

I have a few different Catholic apps on my droid phone, as well as some Catholic texts. Very handy to be able to read when waiting in line, riding in a car, etc. I have a couple of Bibles, but haven’t been able to find a really good Catholic Bible study app yet – anyone know of one?

Access to the Bible is to be facilitated so as many people as possible can read it. NEVER EVER EVER a bad thing!!!👍
