It is wrong to change what you "give up" for Lent?

I gave up alcohol for Lent because I thought perhaps I had gotten into a habit of drinking too much, and also to save household finances to go towards the giving of alms. I know that normally you are allowed to indulge in whatever you give up for Lent on Sundays. As long as I only have one or two drinks on Sunday, would that be okay? Or could I change my resolution to “cutting back” instead of giving it up completely?

“Giving up” things for Lent are personal devotions that the Church does not regulate. You can change your resolution, adjust it, or entirely set it aside; that is up to you.

I must say though that if you gave up alcohol for Lent because you felt you were drinking too much and are now craving it enough to want to change your Lenten observance, that might indicate a problem with alcohol that I can only recommend be discussed with your doctor or another health-care professional. If need be, you can obtain a referral to a Catholic counselor through the Pastoral Solutions Institute or through CatholicTherapists.com. You might also want to look into the work of the Calix Society.
