Instagram some times ago made me commit mortal sins, so, I moderate my use. Yesterday, I was using it to see what my parish friends was doing in Carnival (here in Brazil it’s a festivity full of sins). I was using Instagram to see if they were living this festivity as real catholics or not. Seeing the timeline I came across a photo that I realized that this photo could make me commit a mortal sin. So, after this, I logged off Instagram and deleted my account permanently (and my facebook account too). I want to know if I committed a mortal sin exposing me in this ocasion.

Sorry for my english, I’m brazilian.

Sounds more like an occasion of sin, which you have taken action to avoid. And my sincere congratulations on freeing yourself from these dreadful social media sites. Be happy and don’t look back!

No. You recognized the temptation and the near occasion of sin. You not only rejected the temptation, you took steps to make sure the near occasion couldn’t happen again. Remember, to commit a mortal sin you must know that your action will be a mortal sin and still do it anyways. You recognized the mortal sin and did not do it.

I would also give this piece of advice. Take a good look at the motivation that led you to check the pictures to see if your friends were sinning or not. That is very likely one of your triggers. Deleting your account was a good way to start getting rid of it.

You should speak to a priest about this in confession and not seek help from strangers online on whether you committed a mortal sin or not.

Trolling your friends on Social Media trying to be the morality police is concerning. Please, speak to your pastor.
