Italian Mass Readings

A quick Q for any Italian CAF members, or anyone else who may know, what Scripture translation is used for the readings at Mass in the Italian Church?

Also, if anyone here is fairly up to date on different Bible translations in Italian, is there a decent option to go for? For example, in English the RSV is far better than the Jerusalem Bible, but in French the Jerusalem translation is highly regarded. Is the Italian translation of the Jerusalem Bible worth getting? There’s a decent looking study Bible available which may be worth a purchase, but I just thought I’d see if anyone had any opinions before I laid out my money.

I believe the Italian Bishops’ Conference in the past few years approved a new translation of the Bible, referred to as the “CEI” version in honor of the Italian Bishops’ Conference.
 
It used to be the Bibbia Martini for the longest time. The in the 70’s they started to follow different translations from the CEI (Italian Episcopal Council) and now they are trying to release the latest translation. However, like in English the quality of translations has been going down the drain to the point that the latest one has not been authorized for release yet. Just because Italian is very close to Latin that does not mean that they have a good translation of the Bible or of the Roman Missal. In my opinion the Italian translations want to be more of “dynamic” translations then they need to be given the closeness between Latin and Italian.

BTW from what I understand the Italian “Jerusalem Bible” is simply the CEI Bible with the translated footnotes of the Jerusalem Bible.

It could be but remember, every translation (or paraphrase, for that matter) carries a certain amount of error with it. No translation is infallible. Going from one translation to another translation only compounds or adds to the amount of or possibility of error. You probably already knew that though.

I would disagree with your statement. It is good that the follow the CEI translations, that it is the way it should be done, it is bad that the CEI translations are not as good as they could be.

BTW I would bet that the Extraordinary Form still uses the Bibbia Martini but I need to verify that.:hmmm:
 
Yes, you are right, I should have been more careful with what I said 🙂 I have been looking through some reviews of the CEI translation, and they are not pretty reading.
