So, I’ve been reading the articles and opinion pieces on the Pope’s celebration of Holy Thursday with some interest. Living in Hawaii, my life is late in the day and we get the benefit of current events before the sun is far above the horizon.
So it was interesting when our 76-year-old priest chose an 8-year-old girl, my wife, and two men to have their feet washed last evening.
In my circle of friends and acquaintances, even the most recalcitrant atheists and the most pious Catholics (and those that fall in between) have developed nothing but gushing praise for the new Holy Father.
Pope Benedict’s abdication and Pope Francis’s election were both surprises to the papal handicappers - but I can’t help but wonder if the events of the last 2 months are blatant examples of the Holy Spirit giving the Church exactly what she needs at this point in time.
