I feel like I failed my Faith…like I rejected the Church almost. 😦

I was chatting online with a friend I have not spoken with in nearly 18 years. He’s an ordained minister (I don’t know what denomination). At the end of our conversation, I mentioned that I had seen a Baptist counselor at a point in my life and that I was amazed how there were no fundamental differences in her counseling compared to the Catholic teachings (in that specific matter…I know there are serious fundamental differences between Catholics and Baptists).

Anyway, I had worded it such that it sounded like my wife was Baptist, so I clarified that my wife is Catholic, as I am.

He responded to the tune of …man, as long as her Faith is based on Christ, it makes no difference…

And just before saying good bye, I said…“Amen, bro.” AMEN?! But I don’t believe that! It DOES make a difference…I feel like I shirked off my own Faith just to avoid a religious debate with him. 😦

ETA: Should I go back and tell him I don’t agree that it makes no difference?

Sometimes, little slips of the ongue like that happen. You probably just said it because the whole tone of the conversation was as such, and you just said it without fully understanding what he said. However, in future conversations, you may want to lay out what-is-what.

I would suggest just giving this one to God and then moving on. In future when in conversation with your friend just be a little bit more careful about what you say. That’s all.

We all make mistakes, it’s okay. It really is.

What an odd thing for an ordained minister to say.

There are churches who call themselves Christian and yet reject His teachings.

Thanks LoyalViews, nickybr38, and barbkw for the (name removed by moderator)ut. I reflected on it and decided I could not leave it at that. Knowing him how I remember (well…this WAS 18 years ago) I figure he thinks nothing of it either way…so I just sent him a clarification msg and apologized to him for misrepresenting my Faith to him. Now reading it back to myself I wonder if I stil have some of it wrong…maybe he’ll ask for clarification and then I can grab an apologetics book and give him the facts without my personal blubberings.

If anyone might read this, please tell me if you see any critical errors.

[name], I have to confess something to you, and apologize.
When you said it makes no difference as long as Christ is her foundation I said, “Amen, bro!” But that was a lie from me…sort of. I don’t actually believe that way, at least not on the deeper level.

The more I have studied, the more I see that there are BIG differences between Catholics and non-Catholics. Transubstantiation, Tradition+Scripture, Confession to a Priest, etc…. Certainly Christ is the Cornerstone and Foundation of all Christianity. But there are differences of Faith when you get down to the fundamentals.

Anyway, my point isn’t to try to convince you that Catholicism is right, but to apologize for being afraid to be honest, and for not witnessing to my Faith… I should have trusted in God and just told you what I really believed instead of being afraid that I would start an argument… You trusted me enough to share your experience with me…I should have trusted you enough to at least say, “well, I disagree at some level, but on the core issue, yes, Christ is our Foundation of Faith”. I’m really sorry for misrepresenting my Faith to you and for not being honest. Will you please forgive me?

I honestly think you should just leave it alone and move on. Quite frankly, sending him an email like that just makes you seem insecure and that you’re focusing only on yourself. If you feel guilty for something then confess it to your priest and go in peace.

shoulda, coulda, woulda.

forget it.

There’s nothing you’re going to say that will change his mind.

I honestly don’t see the problem with what either of you said.

Let it go. You are not going to change his beliefs, only the Holy Spirit can do that.

You clarified your wife is a Catholic. Her faith IS based on Christ.

He knows full well the differences between the Catholic faith and Baptist beliefs.
You don’t need to say anything, and may do harm if you do.

I would just let it go too. Besides Jesus can work through our mistakes or mispeaks. At any rate, perhaps seed was planted. If you are friends, then there can be a free dialogue of discussion.

Same Jesus but we have the fullness of the Truth. Jesus is really present in the Eucharist! To me that makes all the difference.
