This is kinda a weird question. If someone has severe short term memory loss, then how can they go to confession? I know it’s weird but…

Are you asking because you have short-term memory loss and need advice or oit of curiosity?

I’d imagine writing it down to help remember would be one strategy.

I suppose confess what you remember and that’s it. Isn’t that it actually for all of us? I read people remember sins from childhood long gone after practicing Christianity in adulthood. Maybe the Eucharist is also reigniting conscience or feeding it or resurrecting it if it’s numb.

At the end I say “and I accuse myself of all my sins, both venial and mortal.”

Before celebrating the Sacrament of Penance, one should prepare oneself with an examination of conscience, which involves reflecting prayerfully on one’s thoughts, words, and deeds in order to identify any sins.

There are various types of examinations of conscience but regardless of which one you use to prepare yourself for the Sacrament it should be rooted in Scripture; particularly, the Ten Commandments and Beatitudes. Below are a few examples of Examinations of Conscience that can help you prepare for the Sacrament.

Examination of Conscience for Children

Examination of Conscience for Young Adults

Examination of Conscience for Single People

Were it me, I would keep repeating to myself the sin I committed, so that way I know I would be able confess it

If it were me, I would write it down on paper then forget where I put the paper

That is until I check the dryer a few days later and see fluffs of what was paper everywhere…

In truth I have actually taken a piece of paper to confession with things I needed to remember to confess, because I can be…a’hem…a bit of an airhead at times…I just get nervous and forget…

If my mother in law is typical, her short term memory is only a few minutes. Writing anything down is impossible.

God doesn’t expect the impossible (that’s his job!) from us. If the individual makes best endeavors, then (in my view) the confession is valid.

This is me too. I write them down and take the paper in with me for the exact same reason, I get nervous and will forget what I want to say or when just speaking it will not come out the way I want. I can be bit of an airhead at times also.
