You posted a couple of months ago about your own kid receiving First Holy Communion and whether or not it would make him Catholic. And you posted again over on Evangelization just the other day.Okay, got off the phone with the father and got him calmed down enough I could understand at least half of what he’s saying.
A) The parish has a copy of the little girl’s baptism certificate, parents were told it was needed for enrollment in school
B) Dad and mom did NOT want any participation that made their daughter exclusively Catholic and they made this very clear to former DRE and second grade teacher
C) Dad allowed little girl to take part in first reconciliation because he was told by former DRE it did not make little girl a Catholic. He felt it was a great lesson in God’s forgiveness.
D) Little girl wants to take part in first communion, only reasons she gives for this is that “it looks like fun.”
E) Dad asked current DRE if taking part in first communion would mean his daughter is Catholic and was told “no it would not.”
F) Dad double checks this with diocese and is told daughter is already considered a practicing Catholic
G) Dad feels lied to and tricked into allowing daughter to become practicing Catholic and is wondering if there is anyway to “unring the bell” as he puts it.
Regardless of what one thinks of various denominations, I can see why he’s peeved. I don’t think anyone lied to him, but I think there was a level of carelessness or ineptitude here that he has every right to to be upset with.
I recall you were being told your child could receive Communion in the Catholic Church with his classmates. Your DRE was all ready to march him down the aisle with all the Catholic kids. I also recall we gave you the answer to this question then.
In fact, substitute “Methodist” for “Lutheran” and we have: you and your wife (married outside the Church and no intention of convalidating) and your kid (told it was OK to receiving the Sacraments w/o becoming Catholic). And we have the fact that you thought it was no big deal to have your kid receive Catholic Eucharist but you had no intention of your kid becoming Catholic
**Are you sure we aren’t talking about you here? Everything in this story is suspiciously JUST like what you have been posting about for months regarding your own kid. **
The parents need to make an appointment with the parish priest and go through everything step by step.
